If you haven’t played the “new” Birdwood Golf Course yet, now you have more reasons to give it a try.

Golf Inc. Magazine, which is considered the global authority for golf course developers, has selected Birdwood at Boar’s Head Resort, as the No. 2 “Development of the Year” in the world in its most recent competition. The award is for 2021 and is just another reason for the Charlottesville community to celebrate Davis Love III’s design.

“It’s a real pleasure to see the accolades start to accumulate for this golf complex,” said Russ Cronberg, general manager at Boar’s Head Resort. “The Love Golf Design team members put in a lot of hard work and dedication to see our courses come to fruition, and we look forward to continuing to share it with golfers of all playing levels.”

Birdwood, which also was named the seventh-best course in Virginia in Golf Magazine’s recent ranking, is open to the public. Birdwood also features a six-hole, par-3 course and an 18-hole putting course.

Birdwood’s No. 2 world ranking came only behind Dumbarnie Links in Scotland, a mere 10 miles away from legendary St. Andrews. Birdwood finished one position ahead of the new Payne’s Valley Golf Course, designed by Tiger Woods. Payne’s Valley is in Hollister, Missouri.

Golf Inc. is the world’s only magazine for golf course developers, owners and management company executives and annually hosts the Development of the Year competition, which identifies the best new golf courses in the world.
