No. 14 Virginia shuts out No. 11 Boston College, 1-0

The No. 14 Virginia field hockey team defeated No. 11 Boston College by a 1-0 score on Friday at Turf Field in Charlottesville.

Junior midfielder Annie McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) scored the lone goal of the game.

The game was a battle of the midfield, especially in the first quarter when Virginia (6-10, 1-3 ACC) took the only shot by either team. The score was tied 0-0 at halftime with the two teams combining for six shots, two of which were on goal.

McDonough broke the deadlock 3:25 into the second half, firing off a shot from the right side that sailed into the upper corner of the net. The Eagles (5-5, 1-4 ACC) only took one shot in the second half as the Cavalier defense picked up its third shutout of the season.

“We talk about elite professionalism. Today we were that,” UVA coach Michele Madison said. “Flawless performances from [backs] Amber Ezechiels and Cato Geusgens. We were able to threaten inside today with Meghan Hengerer and Adele Iacobucci and it made a big difference playing through the engine room. Defensively, the team was connected against a disciplined BC team and were able to create attack from the turnovers. We have no choice but to grow competing in back-to-back-to-back-to-back ACC games. And that’s what makes the ACC dominant.”
