Three Cavaliers earn invitations to NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships

Virginia men’s tennis grad student Carl Söderlund has been selected to compete in the both the 2021 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, being held May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 17-22.

Freshman Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) will join Söderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) in the 64-player field of the singles championship. Junior William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) will partner with Söderlund in the 32 team doubles draw.

Söderlund was the Atlantic Coast Conference’s automatic qualifier into the singles tournament and will be the No. 7 seed in the championship. Von der Schulenburg earned an at-large invitation and will be unseeded. Woodall and Söderlund earned an at-large bid into the doubles championship and are unseeded.

Söderlund previously earned bids into both the 2018 and 2019 singles tournaments, but withdrew from both before the start of play. The championship was not held in 2020. This is his first time earning an invitation to the doubles championship. This is Woodall’s first invitation to an NCAA individual championship.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have results for a minimum of six matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have completed a minimum of four matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Match-ups and the complete singles and doubles brackets will be announced the day before the start of the tournament.
