UVA opens The Collegiate Invitational in ninth place

Sophomore Pietro Bovari (Milano, Italy) shot 1-under 70 to stand in fourth place and lead the Virginia men’s golf team following the opening round of The Collegiate Invitational at the Country Club of Birmingham.

As a team, UVA shot 6-over 290 during the first round. North Florida, ranked No. 22, took the early tournament lead with a score of 1-under 283. A total of 13 of the 14 teams in the field are ranked in Golfstat’s current top-50. The Cavaliers are No. 43 in the website’s latest standings.

UVA freshman Chris Fosdick (Middlefield, Conn.) had the team’s second-best score, finishing at 1-over 72. Senior Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) was in 29th place at 73 while freshman George Duangmanee (Fairfax, Va.) was 55th with a round of 75 and senior WeiWei Gao (Cebu, Philippines) was one shot behind him in 63rd place.

The second round of the three-day tournament gets underway at 7:30 Tuesday. UVA will be paired with Charlotte and Ole Miss.
