Virginia opens NCAA Tournament with 6-0 shutout of High Point

The Virginia women’s soccer team opened up the NCAA Tournament with another shutout on Friday night when the Cavaliers posted a 6-0 victory over High Point at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia (17-2-2), which is ranked No. 2 in the polls, is a No. 1 seed in the tournament. With the win, the Cavaliers advance to the second round of play next weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cavaliers used four goals in the first half to push out to the lead, sparked by an own goal from the Panthers (10-8-2) in the 12th minute of play. Midfielders Sydney Zandi and Alexis Theoret would then strike three minutes apart to push the lead out to 3-0. Zandi struck in the 17th minute and Theoret in the 20th minute. Sarah Brunner then scored her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute to close the first-half scoring.
The Hoos would add two more goals in the second half with Diana Ordoñez scoring in the 60th minute and Kira Maguire scoring in the 71st minute.
NOTES
- With the win, Virginia improved to 2-0 all time against High Point with both matches in NCAA Tournament play.
- Diana Ordoñez scored her 16th goal of the season, a new single-season high for the junior forward.
- Her 16 goals is tied for seventh most in a season at UVA and her 43 career goals is tied for fourth most at UVA.
- Sarah Brunner and Kira Maguire both scored their first career goals in the victory over High Point.

“It was a good win and a good performance, so it’s nice to have that combination. That’s what we’ve been stressing most of the year. Even though it’s a new season with the tournament, we were trying to build on what the regular season and ACC Tournament provided us. We did that tonight. We got some good performances from a lot of players – especially ones that came off the bench. It was another good crowd. We appreciate that and will need that moving forward.”
UP NEXT
Virginia advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will play at home again next week against either Milwaukee or Xavier. Match dates and times have yet to be determined.
