Virginia sets school records on Day 2 at NCAA Championships

Virginia swimming divingVirginia set two school records to highlight the second day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday.

UVA picked up a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay to start night with a school-record time of 1:16.01. Matt Brownstead (Port Matilda, Pa.), August Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.), Will Cole (Prospect, Ky.) and Justin Grender (Cincinnati, Ohio), respectively, combined for the record setting swim.

Brownstead made the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle and finished 11th with a time of 19.21, following his 19.08 leadoff swim in the 200 free relay.

The Cavaliers closed out the night with a ninth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. UVA’s Cole, Noah Nichols (Midlothian, Va.), Max Edwards (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Brownstead, respectively, clocked in with a new school record time of 3:04.52.

Virginia is currently 10th overall in the standings with 56 points. California leads with 230 points, Texas (203), Florida (161), Georgia (116) and Texas A&M (88) round out the top five.

PRELIMS

In the 500-yard freestyle, Jack Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 24th overall with a time of 4:15.87.

Casey Storch (Great Falls, Va.) finished 28th in the 200-yard individual medley with a career-best time of 1:44.53, and the ninth-fastest time in UVA history. Sean Conway (Round Hill, Va.) was 34th in a time of 1:45.06.
