Virginia tied for eighth after opening round of NCAA Regional

uva golfThe No. 33 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for eighth place after the opening day of play at the NCAA Regional in Kingston Springs, Tenn.

The Cavaliers shot 5-over 289 on the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee course. NC State and Kent State shared the opening round lead at 7-under 277. The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Virginia was led by sophomore Pietro Bovari who posted a score of 1-under 70, including birdies on his final two holes. Bovari ended the opening day of play in 15th place. Senior Andrew Orischak shot even par 71 and is tied for 19th position.

Senior WeiWei Gao is one shot behind Orischak in 29th place. UVA freshman George Duangmanee rounded out the team scoring with a 4-over 76. He is in 59th place. Freshman Chris Fosdick carded a round of 79 and is in 65th place.

The second round of the three-day tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. The Cavaliers will tee off at 9:25 a.m. ET from the first tee while paired with Clemson and Charlotte. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
