Men’s Squash: Virginia opens season with a 6-3 win against Navy

The Virginia men’s squash team (1-0) opened its 2020-21 season with a 6-3 victory against Navy (0-1) on Saturday (Feb. 27) at the McArthur Squash Center.
Virginia won six of the seven matches contested but forfeited the eighth and ninth lineup positions to give Navy two of its three points.
Freshman Myles McIntire (Andover, Mass.) got the Cavaliers on the board by flying through an 11-1, 11-3, 11-5 victory over Ryan York at position two.
Seniors William Braff and Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) followed McIntire’s win with two of their own. William downed Henry Sparkman 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 at position six while Andrew battled Charles Heath for a 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 win at four.
The Cavaliers led 3-2 heading into the second wave of matches. Freshman Maxwell Velazquez (Brooklyn, New York) downed Gus Prager 11-2, 11-6, 11-5 at position seven to give UVA a 4-2 lead. After Navy picked up a win at one, senior Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) completed an 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 victory at position five.
The match of the day was contested at position three. Freshman Andrew Barr (Beverly Hills, Mich.) held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth game against Millen Randell. The two battled to a 21-19 score in the final frame with Barr outlasting Randell to close out his victory and give the Cavaliers their sixth point.
