No. 14 Virginia wins 6-1 against Louisville

The No. 14 Virginia women’s tennis team (7-2, 3-1 ACC) opened its month-long homestand with a 6-1 victory against Louisville (6-5, 3-3 ACC) on Saturday on the indoor courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Virginia won the doubles point and took five of six singles courts.

Junior Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) and sophomore Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) opened the match with a 6-0 win on doubles court two. Senior Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) and junior Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.) clinched the point with a 6-2 win on court three.

O’Dell carried the momentum from her doubles victory over to her singles court. She breezed through her first set against Jelena Vujanic, 6-0, before closing it out with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Freshman Emma Navarro (Charleston, S.C.) and senior Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, Canada) had even quicker singles matches, with Navarro finishing a 6-2, 6-0 victory on court one against Nikolina Jovic minutes before Johanson completed her 6-1, 6-3 victory against Raven Neely on court three.

Louisville picked up its point with a win on court five to make it a 4-1 score.

On court three, Munera fought through a tiebreaker to decide her first set, which she won 7-0, and a supertiebreaker to decide the third set, which she won 10-6.

Subhash won her match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, but she battled for that victory through long points and extended rallies, with her match being the final to finish.

“Today was a great day for our team,” UVA coach Sara O’Leary said. “I was really pleased with the way our team came out in doubles. We’ve been working on doubles a lot this week and I felt they came out a little bit more confident and composed and organized. That really paid off for us in the doubles, especially against a Louisville team that is known for their doubles — they’ve had a really good season doubles-wise. So that was a great start. I think we carried that momentum into singles. We had some girls that were able to get off quickly and did a good job and took care of business and other girls that had to battle. I was pleased with the way that they fought and competed and just stayed close the whole way through. Now we’re excited for tomorrow.”
