Freshman Gretchen Walsh was named ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week, after helping the Virginia women’s swimming team to a win at No. 4 California last week.
Walsh won her two individual events and was a part of UVA’s two relay teams that each took first place in the dual meet win.
The Nashville, Tenn., native’s collegiate debut featured a Spieker Pool record with her 51.15 time to win the 100-yard backstroke. It is also the third-fastest time in UVA history. Walsh completed her individual event sweep with a win in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.02, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Walsh led off the pool record-setting 200-yard medley relay (1:34.65), swimming the backstroke leg, in UVA’s win to open the meet. The Cavaliers closed out the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Walsh swam the leadoff leg in a time of 21.88, the fourth-fastest 50 free time in UVA history.
Virginia will open its home dual season on Saturday, October 30 when it hosts Army at 10 a.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
