Women’s Golf: Virginia ties for eighth at PING/ASU Invitational

The No. 7 Virginia women’s golf team tied for eighth at the PING/ASU Invitational at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix. The Cavaliers shot 6-over 294 during Sunday’s final round for a three-day total of 17-over 881. New Mexico also tied for eighth place.

Host No. 8 Arizona State ran away with the team title, shooting 25-under 839. No. 2Oregon was second at 854 and top-ranked Stanford was third at 862.

The Cavaliers were led by a 19th-place finish by freshman Amanda Sambach. She had the team’s best final-round score, shooting 2-under 70, to finish at even par 216.

Senior Riley Smyth was 29th at 2-over 218, sophomore Jennifer Cleary was 33rd at 219, graduate student Beth Lillie was 58th at 228 and sophomore Rebecca Skoker was 84th at 242. Cleary shot 2-over 74 during the final round while Smyth and Lillie posted scores of 75. Skoler shot 82 during her final round.

Sambach and Lillie will compete at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur this week. The 72-player tournament runs March 30-April 2.

The Cavaliers’ final regular-season event before the ACC Championships will see UVA in a head-to-head match play against at Georgia on April 3.
