Claudio Romero and Maria Deaviz of Virginia’s men’s and women’s track and field teams were named the ACC men’s and women’s Co-Field Performers of the Week after their performances at the Duke Invitational. They pick up their second consecutive weekly honors upon the league’s announcement Tuesday.
Romero keeps turning up the heat as his season progresses. Coming off a win in the discus at the Colonial Relays where he set the facility record at William & Mary’s Walter J. Zable Stadium, Romero turned in an even better performance at the Duke Invitational. A win in the discus kept him undefeated on the season while his throw reached a season-best 64.31m (211’) and set the facility record at Duke’s Morris Williams Stadium. Romero also placed third in the shot put.
Deaviz elevated her performance as well in Durham as she won the shot put with her throw that reached 17.32m (56’10”) to top a Virginia record she set last season at the Raleigh Relays. Deaviz also threw a personal-best 52.58m (172’6”) in the discus to place third in the event. Deaviz is undefeated in the shot put this season.
Romero shares the weekly honor with Miami’s Russell Robinson who recorded a 16.45m (53’11.7”) mark in the triple jump. Deaviz shares her honor with North Carolina’s Jill Shippee who recorded a mark of 68.43m (224’6”).
Romero and Deaviz each garner the ACC weekly award for the second consecutive week. The Cavaliers are back in action at the Virginia Challenge on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.
