Navarro, Subhash, Montes move on to Round of 16 at NCAA Singles

Three Virginia tennis players advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Individual Championships being held this week at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois. Top-seeded sophomore Emma Navarro, junior Natasha Subhash and sophomore Iñaki Montes each picked up second-round victories on Tuesday. In doubles competition, Navarro teamed up with fellow sophomore Hibah Shaikh for an opening-round win.
Navarro topped Carol Lee of Georgia Tech 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Tuesday in the second round. She will face Abigail Renchelli of NC State on Wednesday in the Round of 16. Subhash defeated Carmen Corley of Oklahoma 6-3, 7-5 in the second round. She will face Paola Diaz of VCU on Wednesday in the Round of 16.
Montes advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 win against 9-16 Seed Johannus Monday of Tennessee in the second round. It was Montes’ second victory against Monday in four days as the two also played on Saturday in the NCAA Semifinals. Montes will take on the No. 2 seed Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina on Wednesday in the Round of 16.
Navarro and Shaikh are the No. 3 seed in the doubles championships. They topped Domenika Turkovic and Patricija Spaka of Arizona State 6-4, 7-5 in the opener. They will face Janice Tjen/Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine or Anna Arkadianou/Petra Hule of Florida St on Wednesday in the Round of 16.
Sophomore Chris Rodesch was edged 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 by Gabriel Diallo of Kentucky on Tuesday in the second round. Sophomore Jeffrey von der Schulenburg fell 7-6 (4), 6-1 against Brian Cernoch of North Carolina in the second round. Rodesch and senior Ryan Goetz, the ACC’s automatic qualifiers into the doubles championship, fell 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 against Jamieson Nathan and Matej Panik of Montana State in the first round of the tournament.
