Following a red-hot start to his collegiate career, Virginia freshman Ben James has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s men’s golfer of the month for September. James led the Cavaliers to a win at the Streamsong Invitational in the team’s season-opening tournament. He shot a school-record 20-under, 196 to capture medalist honors. UVA posted a team score of 56-under 808, the lowest tournament score in program history.
Coming off that opening win, UVA was ranked No. 1 nationally by Golfweek, the program’s first-ever top ranking. James was ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek individual standings.
James (Milford, Conn.) posted a third-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate in his second outing, shooting 2-under 211. That helped the Cavaliers to a fourth-place finish at that event. He was below par in five of his six rounds during the month of September.
Virginia is set to wrap up its fall schedule when it competes at the Golf Club of Georgia Invitational on Oct. 21-23 in Alpharetta, Ga.
Congratulations to Ben James of @UVAMensGolf for being named ACC Golfer of the Month! ⛳️
