Women’s notebook: UVA hosts 22nd-ranked Wolfpack Sunday

VIRGINIA NOTES
- This is the second of three-straight home games for the Cavaliers (14-11, 3-11 ACC) and the team’s second-to-last home game of the season
- The Cavaliers are coming off a 63-53 loss against Louisville on Thursday. Virginia led by 10 points, 38-28, with 8:24 remaining in the third quarter, but Louisville tied the game with 2:14 left in that same period. The Cardinals outscored the Cavaliers 22-10 in the final period to pick up the double-digit win
- The Louisville game was the first time UVA lost a game this season when leading at halftime. The Cavaliers held a 34-26 advantage at the break
- UVA is ranked in the top 20 in the nation in rebounds per game at No. 19 with 42.6 per game. The Cavaliers lead the ACC in offensive rebounds per game at 14.8
- Yonta Vaughn and Alexia Smith each had seven rebounds against Louisville, tying for the team lead. Vaughn is the tenth different player to pace the team in rebounding. Only Cady Pauley has not paced the squad in at least one game this season
- Taylor Valladay had six assists against Louisville with just one turnover. She ranks fifth in the ACC at 3.8 assists per game. In the last five games, she is averaging 4.6 assists per game
- Valladay also scored 11 points against Louisville, her seventh double-digit scoring game of the season
- Camryn Taylor has scored in double figures in each of the last eight games and 10 of the last 11, including posting back-to-back 20-point performances at Syracuse and at home against Virginia Tech
- Taylor has led the team in scoring in seven of the last eight games including scoring a team-high 14 at Pitt and against Louisville
- The Cavaliers have shot better than 80.0 percent from the stripe in three of the last four games. In the last 10 games, UVA is shooting 82.7 percent from the free-throw line (101 of 122). Before that stretch, the Cavaliers were shooting 66.9 percent (through the first 17 games of the season)
- This will be the Cavaliers’ seventh game against a ranked opponent this year
NOTES ON NC STATE
- This is the second meeting of the year between the two teams. NC State (17-7, 7-6) picked up an 87-62 win in Raleigh on Jan. 8
- NC State led 41-30 at the half and outscored the Cavaliers 46-32 in the second half
- Mir McLean suffered her season-ending knee injury in the third quarter of that game
- The Cavaliers had three players finish the game in double figures. Camryn Taylor led all scorers with a 16-point performance. Taylor Valladay scored 13 and Sam Brunelle 12. McLean grabbed 11 rebounds
- NC State had five players finish in double figures with Jada Boyd scoring 13
- UVA committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game
- NC State leads the all-time series 41-40 and has won the last six meetings. Virginia’s last win in the series was a 73-63 victory in Raleigh on Jan 4, 2018
ON THE HORIZON
The Cavaliers have a bye on Thursday before hosting No. 9 Duke on Sunday at 2 p.m. in their final home game of the season. The Duke game will mark Virginia’s Play4Kay game, Senior Day (with McKenna Dale being honored in a pregame ceremony), as well as UVA’s annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day in including a pregame NGWSD Youth Sports Festival on the upper concourse from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. (Note: doors open 30 minutes earlier for this game). Youth in eighth grade and under completing all of the sports stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. Admission to the festival is free with a game ticket. Letterwinners from the first women’s varsity teams to compete at the University of Virginia will be honored in a halftime ceremony.
