Track & Field: Cavaliers close out weekend at Duke Invitational

The Virginia pole vaulters closed out the weekend at the Duke Invitational on Saturday, as Hanne Borstlap led the way for the Cavaliers posting the second-highest clearance in Virginia history.

Borstlap impressed in her second appearance of the outdoor season. The graduate transfer placed fourth and posted a personal-best of 4.10 meters (13’5.25”) which ranks second all-time at Virginia. Borstlap trails only Bridget Guy who set the Virginia record at 4.46 meters (14’7.5”) in 2018.

Following Borstlap was Trina Barcarola who placed fifth with a clearance of 3.95 meters (12’11.5”), a season-best for the junior. Freshman Sam Romano cleared the same height in a seventh-place finish. Romano’s performance puts her at sixth all-time at UVA and third amongst Virginia freshmen.

On the men’s side, Justin Rogers made his outdoor debut with a clearance of 4.75 meters (15’7”).

ADDITIONAL DUKE INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

• Janae Profit took second place in the discus with a personal-best mark of 51.24 meters (168’1”)
• Kaiya Saunders also threw a personal-best in the discus marking 50.16 meters (164’7”)
• Jada Marsh threw a personal-best in the hammer marking 55.19 meters (181’1”)
• John Fay threw 57.80 meters (189’7”) in the men’s hammer throw

SPEC TOWNS INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

• The Cavalier women posted the ACC’s leading time in the 4×100-meter relay as Sarah Akpan, Kayla Bonnick, Jada Pierre and Jada Seaman combined to clock 44.24 seconds
• Seaman posted 23.51 in the 200 meters while Sarah Akpan ran 23.57 – the second-fastest among UVA freshmen all-time
• Seaman (11.50), Bonnick (11.58) and Akpan (11.72) went 3-4-6 in the 100 meters
• Emily Alexandru (58.60) and Alex Sherman (51.36) each posted personal-bests in the 400 hurdles – Sherman’s time currently ranks third in the ACC
