Swimming & Diving: Douglass, Canny, DeSorbo earn ACC awards

Senior Kate Douglass, freshman Aimee Canny and Virginia head coach Todd DeSorbo picked up ACC Awards, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Douglass was named the ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season. The Pelham, N.Y. native, captured three individual NCAA titles and four relay titles to lead Virginia to its third consecutive NCAA Championship. Douglass NCAA, American and US Open records in all three individual event wins at NCAAs. She was named the CSCAA Women’s Swimmer of the Meet and CSCAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year for her performance.
Canny earned ACC Women’s Freshman of the Year honors after joining the Cavaliers in January. Canny won NCAA titles as part of the 800 free relay and 400 medley relay in her first NCAA Championship appearance. Canny added a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at NCAAs. Her time of 1:42.34 is the second-fastest in UVA history. Canny was runner-up at the ACC Championships in the 200 free behind teammate Alex Walsh.
DeSorbo guided Virginia to its third consecutive NCAA Championship. UVA became just the sixth program ever to win back-to-back-to-back championships. DeSorbo led a group of 17 swimmers and two divers that qualified for the 2023 NCAA Championships and in total collected 47 All-America honors. The Cavaliers won six individual NCAA titles and swept the five relay NCAA Championships. UVA is just the fourth program to win all five relays. DeSorbo also saw UVA swimmers drop six American, NCAA & US Open record times during the meet and three UVA records.
