Women’s Lacrosse: No. 12 UVA falls in NCAA opening round against UAlbany, 16-14

The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse team was leading 10-3, but UAlbany outscored UVA 13-4 in the final 24 minutes to win 16-14 on Friday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver.
Sophomore Rachel Clark, junior Mackenzie Hoeg and senior Jaime Biskup each finished with hat tricks. Morgan Schwab had a team-high seven points, dishing out six assists. UAlbany’s Sarah Falk had a game-high seven goals and Katie Pascale had seven points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate student Ashlyn McGovern scored the first goal of the day for the Cavaliers (11-7) to tie it up 1-1 before another goal for UAlbany.
- The Cavaliers used a 3-0 run that included back-to-back goals from Biskup in 47 seconds of game time to go ahead 4-2. Hoeg added the final goal in the run on a fantastic catch from a pass by Schwab.
- The Great Danes (13-6) scored just before the quarter expired as UVA took a 4-3 lead into the second period.
- Both teams were scoreless until the 6:50 mark in the second quarter when Clark notched her first goal of the game to put UVA up 5-3.
- Clark added another and Biskup completed her hat trick in the first half as UVA took a 7-3 lead into the break.
- The Cavaliers kept the momentum rolling in the second half as Schwab scored just 59 seconds into the third and senior Kiki Shaw scored to make it a 9-3 lead with 13:42 to go in the third.
- Clark added another to complete her hat trick to cap off a 6-0 run for Virginia.
- Virginia’s defense held UAlbany without a goal for nearly 24 minutes, including a scoreless second period. UAlbany scored at the 8:50 mark in the third went on a 3-0 run to cut it to 10-6.
- Schwab connected with a driving Hoeg to halt the run as UVA led 11-6.
- UAlbany then climbed back into it with four straight goals to make it 11-10 at the end of the third.
- Sophomore Kate Miller connected with Hoeg as she reached a hat trick to put UVA up 12-10.
- The Great Danes surged ahead with a 5-0 run to lead 15-12.
- UVA fought back to within one, 15-14, with goals by Miller and McGovern. Both goals were assisted by Schwab.
- With a minute to go, UAlbany won the draw and held on for to tack on a goal with 23 seconds left.
- Virginia had a chance to score but the ball was checked away and recovered by the Great Danes and time expired.

- Schwab’s six assists match her season high.
- Junior Devon Whitaker led the Cavaliers with a career-high four ground balls.
- Hoeg finished with a team high five draw controls and two caused turnovers.
