BREAKING: Virginia lands 6-5 sharpshooter Sharma from Canada
By Jerry Ratcliffe
Ishan Sharma, the final Virginia offer from the recruiting class of 2024, has committed to the Cavaliers. Sharma announced the news on his Instagram account Thursday evening.
This is considered a strong “get” for UVA, which beat out Gonzaga, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech for Sharma, who visited Virginia last week. He is a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter from Milton, Ontario, Canada. Sharma is a catch-and-shoot guard who can fire off the dribble and create his own shot when he’s overplayed by defenders.
Sharma, who is of Indian descent, was offered by Virginia after his visit to Charlottesville.
He represented Canada in the 2021 FIBA U16 Americas and the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup, when he averaged 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. During his UPLAY team’s five-game appearance at Peach Jam this summer, Sharma was 16 of 36 from the 3-point arc and scored 28 points in one game, going 8 of 14 from the field, including five 3-pointers. He scored a game-high 34 points vs. The Rock School (Florida) in the Lighthouse Prep Challenge.
With UPLAY, the wing made nearly 45 percent of his 3-point shots over the summer.
