Field Hockey: No. 4 Cavaliers blanked by No. 2 Tar Heels, 4-0

The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team suffered a 4-0 loss at No. 2 North Carolina on Friday at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cavaliers (12-3, 5-2 ACC) trailed 1-0 at halftime, with the two teams combining for just three shots in the first half, but the Tar Heels (13-0, 6-0) dominated the second half with Carly Bruder scoring three penalty corner goals.

Virginia found its offensive footing in the fourth quarter, taking all three of its shots in the period, with four penalty corner opportunities, but the Tar Heel defense kept the Cavaliers from getting a clear shot on goal.

  • This was the first time this season that Virginia was shut out, and just the third time in the last two years UVA failed to score a goal in a game
  • Goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy made two saves
  • Senior Noa Boterman took all three UVA shots
  • UNC had 10 shots, six on goal
