Jalen Warley’s father, Jason Warley, disputed a report that his son left Virginia because the big senior guard had dropped in the point guard pecking order.

Jason Warley contacted Chris Graham of the Augusta Free Press and “insisted” that his son was UVA’s starting point guard, even though he was playing with a hand injury. Jalen Warley, a 6-foot-7 guard who transferred from Florida State to UVA in the offseason, has only one year of eligibility remaining.

Warley announced this week that he was redshirting and entered the transfer portal a day after interim head coach Ron Sanchez said that UVA’s point guard position would be “by committee.” Warley would share time at the spot with Iowa State transfer Dai Dai Ames and redshirt freshman Christian Bliss.

If Warley didn’t fall behind Ames in the rotation, then why else would he leave a week before the season opener? Warley’s father didn’t supply an answer.

He did say that his son already had new offers from three top 25 schools and disputed a report from 247Sports that Jalen was still considering the possibility of returning to UVA.

“Jalen never had second thoughts about returning,” Jason Warley told Graham. “That isn’t true at all, maybe someone saving face.”

Apparently Warley plans to skip this basketball season regardless of where he lands in order to get acclimated and recuperate from his hand injury.
