Former Virginia star guard Kyle Guy isn’t through playing basketball.
Guy, who took on a role as mentor/special assistant at his alma mater last season, then accepted a fulltime assistant coaching job at Nevada last April, is returning to pro hoops. The 28-year-old will sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Indianapolis Pacers, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The Exhibit 10 contract will lead to Guy playing for the Pacers’ G League affiliate in Noblesville, near Indianapolis. The Pacers are coached by another former UVA guard, Rick Carlisle, who led Indy to the NBA Championship series this past season.
While the Pacers have a full 21-man roster, once Guy joins the G League squad, he will be eligible for up to $85,000 if he manages to spend at least 60 days with Noblesville.
Guy was playing in Europe when he decided to return to Virginia and gain his degree, which he accomplished, and joined Tony Bennett’s coaching staff in the summer of 2024, shortly before Bennett’s sudden retirement last October. Guy remained on the staff of interim coach Ron Sanchez last season but was not retained by new Virginia coach Ryan Odom, who brought his entire VCU staff with him to Charlottesville. Guy accepted a position on Steve Alford’s staff at Nevada.
Guy, who was one of the top 3-point shooters in UVA history, was the 2019 Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player for the national champion Cavaliers.
After his collegiate career, Guy was with the Sacramento Kings for two seasons and spent a portion of the 2021-22 campaign with the Miami Heat prior to signing a contract in Europe. His last playing time was in 2024 in the Spanish League.
During his NBA career, Guy played in 53 games over three years and averaged 3.1 points per game and shot 36 percent from the field and 30 percent from the 3-point line.
