The Virginia football team moved up three spots to No. 18 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. It’s the first time since the final week of the 2007 regular season that the Cavaliers (4-0, 2-0 ACC) have been ranked inside the top 20 of the AP poll.

That was the week of November 24, when then-No. 16 UVA hosted eighth-ranked Virginia Tech with the Coastal Division championship on the line.

The 4-0 start is the best since 2004, when the Wahoos won their first five games under Al Groh.

The ‘Hoos received 430 votes in the poll, which is made up of 62 sportswriters and broadcasters across the country. Virginia’s next opponent, Notre Dame, fell from seventh to 10th in this week’s poll after coming up short at No. 3 Georgia, 23-17, Saturday night.

Clemson held firm to the top spot with a big win over Charlotte, while Alabama blew out Southern Miss to remain at No. 2. Fourth-ranked LSU and No. 5 Ohio State round out the top five.

In the USA Today Coaches’ poll, the Cavaliers are also ranked No. 18 this week, and the Fighting Irish are No. 10. UVA jumped up four spots from No. 22 and got 450 votes in the coaches’ poll.
