2026 has been a good year for Bowen Sargent. The University of Virginia golf coach was named both the ACC and National Coach of the Year, and directed his Cavaliers team to the national final eight for the third straight year.

He’s also watched as four of his players have competed in this week’s U.S. Open.

Sargent will head to the course next weekend — June 27 & 28 — to compete in the Charlottesville City Amateur Golf Championship at Meadowcreek Golf Course, where he is two-time defending champion of the Senior Division.

Registration for all divisions of the City tournament — men’s regular (ages 16-49), senior (50-64), super senior (65-74), legends (75 & up), and women is open through June 24. For details, contact tournament director Phillip Seay at: Seayp@charlottesville.org.

While Sargent is defending his title, so will be Nick Brediger, one of the top amateurs in the state, in the men’s regular division, while Todd Perry will defend his Super Senior title and Barbara Nance will defend her Ladies Championship.

The event is a 36-hole, medal play tournament, flighted after Round 1. VSGA points are available in the men’s regular and senior divisions.

Cost is $185 for guests and $95 for pass holders, which includes green fees, cart, range balls and prizes.

Practice rounds can be played beginning after 12 p.m. on June 21 through June 26 ($30 guest tournament participant fee, $19 pass holder cart fee). Identify as a tournament participant when making practice tee times.

As of now, the first tee time for both Saturday and Sunday will be 8 a.m., weather pending.

Seay noted to participants, “As you know, we are in a drought and as you would expect, the course is playing fast. Maintenance staff is working to maintain tournament conditions. Additionally, the course is healing nicely from a complete irrigation system install from February through April.”
