The Virginia women’s track and field program concluded its 2022 outdoor campaign at the NCAA Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene on Saturday afternoon, as Ashley Anumba achieved second team All-American honors in the discus.

Anumba entered the discus with a UVA-record mark of 57.53 meters (188’9”) after a season in which she topped the school’s best mark on four separate occasions. The graduate transfer was forced to deal with difficult conditions throughout the competition as rain fell sporadically over the competitors.

Though she did not advance to the finals, Anumba placed 15th overall with a mark of 52.24 meters (171’5”) to earn second team All-American honors for the first time in her career. Anumba is just the fourth female Cavalier to record All-American status in the discus.

Earlier in the week, Maria Deaviz placed fourth and recorded first team All-American honors in the shot put improving upon her own school record in the process (17.97 meters). Helena Lindsay became the fourth female Cavalier to compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while Jada Seaman placed 23rd in the 200 meters. The Virginia women placed 41st overall with five points.

The men’s week in Eugene was highlighted by outstanding performances from Claudio Romero and Ethan Dabbs. Romero claimed the first individual NCAA title for UVA in the discus since Filip Mihaljevic in 2017 while Dabbs’ runner-up performance in the javelin tied Brian Kollar for the best-ever finish in UVA history. Yasin Sado and Jacob Lemmon also picked up second team All-American honors. Romero and Dabbs combined for 18 points lifting the Wahoos to a 14th place finish overall, the men’s best finish since 2017 and third-best finish all-time.

From Director of Track & Field Vin Lananna:

“This week proved that the University of Virginia is a competitor on the national level. As a unified team, we will continue to chip away season by season until we find ourselves on the podium.”
