At long last, Shingler claims his first Kenridge Invitational title

After suffering back-to-back bogeys on Farmington’s 9th and 10th holes in the final round of the 85th Kenridge Invitational on Sunday, Scott Shingler gathered himself and finished in championship style.

The Haymarket golfer, considered one of the state’s best amateurs, finished off the remainder of the back nine at 2-under par and claimed the first Kenridge title of his illustrious career. Shingler turned in a final round, 3-under 67 (67-72-67—206) for a one-stroke win over runnerup Frank Alafoginis (69-68-70—207).

Shingler’s performance down the home stretch secured the tournament in his favor, as he birdied 13 and 15 and parred the difficult, par-4 18th, one of the most challenging finishing holes in state golf circles.

Meanwhile, Alafoginis, who shot even par on the front, also turned in an even-par back nine with a bogey at No. 11, followed by back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14, ending with a tragic bogey on 18 which cost him a chance at a playoff with Shingler.

Three players finished in a tie for third, including first-round leader Eddie Coffren V of the University of Lynchburg golf team, who fired the lowest round in the tournament with an opening 5-under 65. Coffren bounced back with a 69 on Sunday to finish along with Matt Barnes and Mehrbaan Singh, all finishing at 2-under 208. Click here to see the full results.

Other notables included second-round leader Nate Faulkner, who turned in a final-round 75 to finish at 212, and Farmington member Tim Morris, who opened Friday with a 67 but finished 72-77 for a 216.

Defending champion Bryce Corbett of Radford University finished at plus-12, 222.
