Cavaliers drop non-conference match at Miami on Sunday

Virginia (2-12, 0-11 ACC) fell in straight sets against Miami (8-4, 7-4 ACC) on Sunday, 3-0, at Miami’s Knight Sports Complex.
Miami won the match 25-14, 25-19, 29-27.
Christine Jarman led UVA with 11 kills, while Sarah Billiard notched 10 kills, including the 1,000th of her career. Megan Wilson had 22 assists, while Alex Spencer had a team-best 12 digs in the losing cause.
SET 1: MIA 25-14
UVA started out with a 6-3 lead, courtesy of a 3-0 run. Tied, 3-3, Mary Shaffer notched a kill, followed by a bad Miami set and capped on a kill by Czhen Beneby.
Miami won the next five points to take an 8-6 lead. A service ace by Madison Morey capped the run. The Hurricanes increased their lead to 15-10 after a kill by Angela Grieve. Miami closed the set out on a 10-4 run, finishing the set on a kill by Elizaveta Lukianova.
SET 2: MIA 25-19
The Hurricanes started working quickly, creating a 7-2 lead to start the set. Back-to-back kills by Jarman, followed by an attack error from Lukianova and UVA’s deficit was down to two, 8-6.
Miami went on an 8-4 spurt to take a 16-10 lead in the set. The streak was capped on a UVA ball-handling error, prompting a Cavalier timeout. The Cavaliers came storming back, cutting its deficit to two points, 21-19, after a Billiard kill capped a 9-5 run by the Cavaliers.
Miami scored the final four points of the set, winning the frame 25-19. Back-to-back ball handling errors by the Cavaliers halted the UVA comeback in the second set.
SET 3: MIA 29-27
Virginia started out with a 3-1 lead in the set. It started with the 1,000th kill of Billiard’s career. After a kill by Grace Turner, the run was capped by a Miami service error. The Hurricanes won the next four points to take a 5-3 lead in the set.
The Cavaliers and Canes traded points back and forth with Miami holding a narrow 16-13 lead. Virginia won the next four points to take an 17-16 lead, forcing a Miami timeout. Turner started the run with a kill and capped the run with a service ace with two Miami attack errors in between. Later, UVA used a 3-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. Wilson capped the spurt with an ace.
UVA and Miami went on to be tied every point starting at 21-21 all the way to 27-27 with UVA trading set-point opportunities for match-point serves for Miami. A Jarman kill made it 27-26 with Alex Spencer serving set-point. Miami responded with three points in a row, cinching the match on a UVA attack error.
