Cavaliers Get Verbal Commitment From Kadin Shedrick

Kadin Shedrick with UVA Coach Tony Bennett

Virginia coach Tony Bennett and his staff joined nearly 30 other schools across the country on August 10th when they offered a scholarship to rising senior Kadin Shedrick.

Ten days later, Shedrick announced his verbal commitment to the Cavaliers, less than a week after trimming his list of suitors from over 25 down to eight — UVA, Florida, Indiana, Louisville, Providence, Wake Forest, Wisconsin and Xavier.

Shedrick, a 6-foot-10, 200-pound power forward from Holly Springs High School in North Carolina, took an unofficial visit to Charlottesville over the weekend and made it known that UVa will be his home for the next few years.

He acknowledged that he was just as impressed with the way Bennett’s program has developed players as he was with the facilities and the “college town” atmosphere around grounds.

Relatively unknown on a national level going into the spring and summer AAU slate, Shedrick burst onto the recruiting scene, picking up a ton of interest from several Power 5 schools.

Growing nearly eight inches from a guard into a big man over the past two years a la Anthony Davis, Shedrick shined brightest at the Adidas Summer Championships in Los Angeles last month.

Not only is he a solid rebounder and rim protector who can run the floor with ease, he is extremely athletic, can take you baseline and throw one down, but can also shoot from the perimeter. In addition, he has developed a strong mid-range ability. He also has a high basketball IQ and is as exceptional in the classroom as he is on the hardwood.

As a sophomore at Holly Springs, Shedrick shattered a school record with 69 blocked shots in just 25 games. As a junior last year, he averaged 16.2 points (59% field goals), 9.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks a game.

Shedrick plays for Garner Road West on the AAU circuit, which is coached by Dwayne West, the brother of two-time reigning NBA champion and former All-Star big man David West of the Golden State Warriors. West has worked out with Shedrick and his teammates over the past few offseasons, and has even helped his brother coach from the sidelines.

Although Shedrick is currently regarded as a three-star prospect by several recruiting services, his stock is expected to soar as high as into the top 60 in the country when the new rankings are released soon.

Many believe he will need to hit the weight room, but Wahoo fans can expect Shedrick to be a fixture on both ends of the floor for years to come.
