Cavaliers in second place heading into final day of ACC Championships

Senior Ted Schubert recorded his second ACC title of the meet on Friday to lead the Virginia men’s swimming team on the third day of the ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Cavaliers will head into the final day of competition in second place with 762 points. NC State leads the team standings with 853, while Louisville ranks third with 746 points.

Schubert swam a season-best time in the 400-yard individual medley to win his second ACC title. The senior dropped four seconds off his prelim time to finish the event in first place with a time of 3:40.01. His time ranks second in the NCAA this season.

Sophomore Casey Storch touched the wall in the 400-yard individual medley in third place to join Schubert on the podium. Storch recorded a time of 3:44.02, his fastest time this season, to round out the top three. He earned his first All-ACC honor with the swim.

Junior Samuel Schilling earned his first All-ACC honor with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Schilling swam a time of 1:33.98 in the finals. His prelim time of 1:33.42 ranks third in program history.

Additionally, junior Keefer Barnum set a UVA record in the 100-yard breaststroke, topping the record set by Yannick Kaeser in 2014. Barnum swam a time of 52.38 in the prelims. He finished fourth in the finals with a time of 52.51.

The Cavaliers concluded the night with its 400-yard medley relay team of senior Joe Clark, Barnum, freshman Konnar Klinksiek and senior Ryan Baker capturing the third-fastest time of the night. The Cavaliers recorded a time of 3:05.82, second-fastest time in program history, to reach the podium.

Meet Notes

  • All three diving events were added to tonight’s team score.
  • Virginia won the 400-yard individual medley for the second consecutive year with Schubert earning the 2020 title and former Cavalier Brendan Casey earning the 2019 title.
  • Schubert is only the second Cavalier on the men’s team to win two individual ACC titles in the same year since David Karasek did so in 2012. He joins Casey who captured two titles at last year’s championship.
  • Barnum set a UVA record in the 100-yard breaststroke during the prelims.
  • Klinksiek’s time in the B final of the 100-yard butterfly (46.26) ranks third in UVA history, while freshman Max Edwards’ time in the event (46.45) from the C final ranks fifth in program history.
  • Freshman Jack Wright captured the eighth-best time in program history in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle, recording a time of 1:34.63. He finished seventh in the finals with a time of 1:34.69. Ryan Baker finished fifth in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:34.59.
  • Clark competed in the A final of the 100-yard backstroke, placing fifth with a time of 46.44.

“Another historic day for our men with two freshmen (Klinksiek and Edwards) starting the night off by posting all-time top swims (in program history) in the 100 fly, followed by Ted (Schubert) winning the 4-IM in a bit of redemption from two years ago” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “It was great to have his teammate Casey (Storch) join him on the podium. Our 200 free guys showed our depth with (UVA advancing) three finalist and Sam Schilling making his first ever championship final at ACCs and finishing second. Keefer (Barnum) set a school record this morning. We had some great backstroke races and then had a relay making the podium.

“The men put themselves in a position to have their best finish in eight years, so tomorrow we’ve got to come out ready and make the morning our best session of the meet. I’m looking forward to the battle.”
