Deaviz sets school record, Sado sets meet record at Duke Invitational

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams completed the second day of competition at the Duke Invitational where the Cavaliers turned in impressive performances on both the men’s and women’s sides including a school record showing from Maria Deaviz on Friday morning.
Deaviz got the ball rolling for the Cavaliers in the shot put at the start of the day. On her very first attempt the sophomore launched a bomb reaching 17.32m (56’10”) to win the event and top her own school record set last season at the Raleigh Relays (17.18m / 56’4.5”). Ashley Anumba threw 15.29m (50’2”) finishing fourth in the event.
On the men’s side Claudio Romero competed in the shot put for the first time this outdoor season. Romero recorded a mark of 17.59m (57’8.5”) to take third place in the competition.
The Cavalier distance runners turned in another impressive performance. Ka’eo Kruse and Nathan Mountain competed in the 1500m where both shaved three seconds off their personal-best times as Kruse clocked 3:40.04 and Mountain recorded a time of 3:40.99. Justin Diehl recorded a personal best in the 1500m while finishing third in his heat.
The success continued for the Cavaliers with Yasin Sado’s display in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Sado won the event finishing with a personal-best time of 8:41.36. The time set a Duke Invitational record and ranks sixth on the Virginia all-time outdoor performance list.
In the 5000m Helena Lindsay finished fourth while posting a personal-best time of 16:26.97 while Justin Wachtel placed fifth at 14:13.57.

“We saw a lot of great performances today. Maria’s school-record in the shot put and Yasin’s performance in the steeplechase were inspiring. We have plenty more to accomplish but at this point in the season, it is a great sign to see our team continue to take steps forward collectively.”
