The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss against No. 5 Louisville on Friday at Trager Stadium.

It was the first time Virginia (6-4, 1-2 ACC) was shut out this season. It was the third shutout of the year for the Cardinals whose defense ranks sixth in the nation with 0.89 goals allowed per game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia held a 2-1 edge in shots in the first quarter, but the Cardinals (9-1, 1-1) broke through in the second, scoring on a corner 7:42 into the period to hold a 1-0 lead at the break. UVA goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy made three saves in a five-second span to keep the score 1-0 with nine minutes left in the game, but the Cardinals scored off their next penalty corner to make it 2-0.

Virginia had its lone penalty corner with 5:45 left in the game, but could not get a shot off.

  • The last time Virginia was shut out was Oct. 25 of last season when they suffered a 2-0 loss against Maryland
  • Tyler Kennedy logged four saves. Louisville’s Merlijn van der Vegthad made two
  • The game at Louisville was Virginia’s third straight top-10 match-up
  • This was Virginia’s first road loss of the year and are now 4-1 in road contests
  • This was the 50th anniversary of the first game in the UVA program’s history. UVA played Roanoke College on Sept. 29, 1973, in what was the first intercollegiate team contest by University of Virginia female students

The Cavaliers close out their current road trip by playing at Miami University on Sunday at noon. Virginia returns home to host No. 4 Duke on Friday at 5 p.m.
