The No. 8 Virginia field hockey team picked up a 5-0 victory at Wake Forest on Friday at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem.

The Cavaliers (8-5, 2-3 ACC) had four different players score, with Taryn Tkachuk contributing two goals and an assist.

This was Virginia’s fourth shutout victory of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Noa Boterman got the Cavaliers on the board midway through the first period, knocking in a pass from Laura Janssen. Janssen scored a goal of her own 13 seconds into the second quarter when Tkachuk took off down the sidelines after the first push, connecting with Janssen in the circle who sliced in the ball to make it 2-0.

Tkachuk scored 4:17 into the second half, knocking in a rebound after an initial save to make it a 3-0 lead. Adele Iacobucci added UVA’s fourth goal 1:48 into the fourth quarter, driving through the midfield and then firing off a shot from the top of the circle. With 3:22 remaining in the game, Tkachuk scored the fifth goal, tipping in a shot off a penalty corner from Jans Croon.

NOTES

  • Virginia held an 18-4 edge in shots. All of Wake Forest’s shots came in the second quarter
  • The Demon Deacons (5-7, 0-4) had zero shots on goal. It was the third time this season the UVA defense held an offense to zero shots on goal
  • Virginia had a 6-3 edge in penalty corners
  • Nilou Lempers played the second half in goal for UVA
  • Ellie Todd had five saves for Wake Forest
  • Tkachuk’s goals were her fourth and fifth of the year
  • Boterman’s goal was her fifth of the year
  • Janssen’s goal was her fourth of the year
  • Iacobucci’s goal was her third

The Cavaliers close out the weekend by playing a non-conference contest at No. 2 Duke on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on the ACC Network.
