The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team closed out the weekend with a 6-0 victory against Temple on Sunday at Howarth Field in Philadelphia.

Virginia (3-1) led 1-0 at halftime before pouring in five goals after the break. Temple (2-2) did not take a shot in the game.

The six goals were scored by five different players with Daniela Mendez Trendler scoring two goals with an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Taryn Tkachuk got the Cavaliers on the board 7:43 into the second quarter. Sloan Davidson sent a shot in the air toward the goal that was deflected in by Tkachuk.

UVA held that 1-0 lead at the break with a 3-0 advantage in shots.

The second half was all Virginia. Mendez-Trendler scored 59 seconds into the third quarter, dribbling a ball into the circle and firing a shot into the cage. She added a second goal eight minutes later, knocking in a pass from Mia Abello. Abello scored Virginia’s third goal of the third, converting a penalty corner to make it 4-0 Cavaliers.

Esha Shah scored the Cavaliers’ fifth goal 41 seconds into the final period, picking up a loose ball in front of the net and firing it in untouched for the score. Minnie Pollock added the sixth goal with 13.8 seconds remaining in the game, scoring off a feed from Lilly Hengerer.

  • Virginia outshot the Owls 13-0
  • Temple’s goalkeeper Molly Frey made one save
  • Virginia had eight different players either score a goal or log an assist
  • Davidson’s assist was the first point of her career
  • Mendez-Trendler leads the team with three goals and eight points
  • UVA head coach Michele Madison began her head coaching career at Temple, leading the Owl to three NCAA tournament berths in her four seasons and the A-10 title in her final year. She went 56-28-6 in her four seasons there
  • UVA alumna Michelle Vittese (2008-10, 2012) is the head coach at Temple. She was a three-time All-American at Virginia and helped lead the team to the 2009 and 2010 Final Fours. She is in her second season as the head coach for the Owls
  • Temple’s assistant coach is UVA alumna Carissa Vittese (2010-13). She was a two-time All-Region honoree at UVA and a member of the 2010 Final Four team. This is her third season as an assistant coach for the Owls
