McGovern and freshman midfielder Annie Dyson scored two goals in the first 2:30 of the second half to give the Cavaliers a 9-1 advantage.

The Cavaliers (9-2) won the doubles point and used victories at one and three singles to build up a 3-1 lead over USC (6-5). Senior Aswin Lizen clinched the victory for Virginia with a win on court six.

In doubles, junior Carl Söderlund and freshman William Woodall got things started with a 7-5 victory on court one. Senior Henrik Wiersholm and freshman Brandon Nakashima clinched the point by winning 6-3 on court two.

In singles, Nakashima picked up a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jack Jaede on court three to put UVA up 2-0. After the Trojans won on court five, Söderlund finished off a 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 56 Brandon Holt on the top court. Lizen downed Jake Sands, 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the victory.

Senior Henrik Wiersholm had dropped his first set, 6-1, to No. 4 Daniel Cukierman, but had rallied in the second set and was leading, 5-3, when play was halted. Sophomore Gianni Ross had been edged in a tiebreaker in his first set against No. 31 Laurens Verboven, but was leading 5-0 in the second set.

USC is ranked No. 5 in the latest Oracle ITA rankings, but was the No. 13 seed in the tournament. Virginia is ranked No. 13 in the most-recent Oracle ITA rankings, but was the No. 8 seed in the championship.

The Cavaliers opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over 8-seed UCLA, before falling 4-0 to top-seeded Ohio State in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

In doubles against the Buckeyes, Wiersholm and freshman Nakashima started the match with a dominant 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. The Buckeyes (12-0) evened the score by picking up a win on court three. On court one, Söderlund and Woodall were broken at 4-4 to fall behind 5-4. The duo had a chance to break back, facing a deuce match-point, but JJ Wolf and Martin Joyce won the point and earned a 6-4 victory to give Ohio State the 1-0 victory.

In singles, Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert picked up straight-set victories over sophomore Ross and senior Lizen to put the Buckeyes up 3-0, but the Cavaliers continued to battle. Nakashima had won his first set, 6-4, over No. 12 Kyle Seelig on court three and was on-serve but leading 40-30 to possibly go up a break on court three when play was abandoned. Freshman Ryan Goetz had won his first set in a tiebreaker, 7-4, and was on-serve in his second set.

Wiersholm had been edged in a tiebreaker to decide his first set, 7-3, but was leading 4-1 in the second set. Virginia Stays Hot with 11-1 Win Over Northern Kentucky

An 11-run outburst capped a perfect weekend for Virginia as the Cavaliers downed Northern Kentucky by a score of 11-1 to wrap up the Elon Softball February Classic at Hunt Softball Park. The Cavaliers’ game against NC Central was cancelled after rain moved into the area.

Freshman Aly Rayle worked four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Rayle (2-1) allowed just a single hit while striking out six Norse in her dominant outing. She did not issue a walk.

Offensively, the Cavaliers (4-5) exploded for a season-high 11 runs with four players driving in multiple markers to key the win.

“I think this weekend is a little more of a testament to who we are and what we’ve been doing,” said head coach Joanna Hardin. “It’s exciting to see the kids really getting some results for the work they have been putting in. We felt like opening weekend wasn’t really who we are so this weekend was really good for us to show ourselves, and prove to ourselves, that all the work we’ve been putting in is paying us back.”

With a 3-1 lead, Virginia broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. All four of those runs came with two outs. With one on and two outs, Donna Friedman started the rally with a double down the left field line. That put runners on second and third for Ashlee Davis, who drove home a pair with a single up the middle. Freshman Abigail Barber added two more runs with her first collegiate home run.

Hayley Busby led off the game with a solo home run, roping a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left. The home run was the first of the season for Busby. NKU (1-3) tied the game in the bottom half as two walks and two wild pitches allowed a run to score without a hit.

Olivia Gott put Virginia back on top with a two-run blast to right center in the third. The long ball was the first of the season for the senior. Davis singled home a pair and Barber homered to put the Hoos ahead 7-1 in the fifth. The Cavaliers scored four more in the top of the seventh, as Kate Covington, Emma McBride, Lacy Smith and Busby all added RBI.

Four Cavaliers had two RBI in the game as Busby, Gott, Davis and Barber all plated a pair. Smith finished the game 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. McBride recorded her first collegiate hit with a double and finished 2 for 4. Barber finished the day a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored in addition to her two RBI. Allyson Frei came on to work the final two innings in the circle. She battled the rain to allow just a bunt-single while striking out three. The Virginia pitching staff limited NKU to just two hits, both infield singles, on the day.

On Saturday, Friedman drove in four runs to lead Virginia to a 7-3 victory over Elon. Friedman finished the day 2 for 4 at the plate as the Cavaliers belted 12 hits to surge past the Phoenix (5-3). After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Virginia held Elon without a run until the final frame of the game. Smith (1-1) came out of the bullpen to fire 1 2/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit ball to earn the win.

“I’m really proud of how gritty the kids have been,” said Hardin. “[Saturday’s game] was a team win. We had pinch-runners come in and do an excellent job, we executed at the plate and pitchers made some big pitches when we needed them to. We’re starting to put it together in all three phases.”

Virginia returns to action next weekend at the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville. The Cavaliers will take on Louisville, Kansas, No. 6 Tennessee, Bradley and Tennessee State in the tournament.

Cavaliers Fall at No. 14 Virginia Tech

uva wrestlingThe No. 22 Virginia wrestling team dropped a tough 30-6 dual on Friday night to No. 14 Virginia Tech at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg.

The Cavaliers (12-9, 1-3 ACC) got wins by decision from junior Jack Mueller at 125 pounds and redshirt sophomore Jay Aiello at 197 pounds. Mueller, the fifth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, improved to 14-0 on the season, while 10th-ranked Aiello picked up his 21st win of the season.

“All the credit to Virginia Tech tonight,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “They out-wrestled us in just about every position. We got humbled tonight, but God gives grace to the humble and opposes the proud. We should now be in a place to learn, so I expect the best practice of the year on Monday.”

With the dual starting at 141 pounds, the Hokies (9-3, 3-1) won the first six weight classes before Aiello would pick up his win over Brooks Wilding. Aiello took the 14-7 decision, narrowly missing on bonus points for the Cavaliers.

Following a low scoring bout at heavyweight, Mueller then picked up the second win of the night for Virginia with his 6-2 decision over Joey Prata at 125 pounds. It is the first time an opponent did not surrender bonus points to Mueller, who has five pinfalls, four tech falls and three major decisions in his 14 victories this season.

The Cavaliers will return to action this weekend, hosting No. 15 Pittsburgh on Friday in a 7 p.m. dual at Memorial Gym. Admission is free to the public and Virginia will recognize four seniors prior to the start of the dual as a part of its Senior Night celebration.

Getting our first ever wins over Princeton and then George Washington, and winning the inaugural Mid-Atlantic team championships were some of the highlights.

Grayson (Bubrosky), Henry (Woodworth), James (Dudzik), Jarett (Odrich) and Killian (Bubrosky) just played their last weekend of college squash and it’s truly been an honor to coach these fine young men and see them develop both on and off of the court.”
