Men’s Cross Country Team Finishes 1st At Penn State National Open
Heading into a busy Homecomings weekend, here’s a look at all things non-football happening around ‘Hooville:
BASEBALL
The Virginia baseball team will wrap up fall competition with the annual Orange and Blue World Series, which has been slightly altered. What is usually a 7-game intrasquad series has been shortened to six games, beginning tonight with the first pitch scheduled for 6 at Disharoon Park.
Game 2 is Sunday at 6, followed by Game 3 Thursday at 3:15. Game 4 will be next Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the following weekend with Game 5 Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 and Game 6 Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1.
Admission and parking (in the University Hall lots) are free for all six games of the series, with all dates and first-pitch times subject to change.
The first team to win four games will be declared this year’s champ, and if the series ends in a 3-3 tie, whichever side scored more runs wins.
Coach Brian O’Connor announced the team’s 2019 55-game spring schedule Monday, which will begin Feb. 15 against Vanderbilt in the MLB Collegiate Tournament in Scottsdale, AZ. The ‘Hoos will also face TCU on Feb. 16 and Cal State Fullerton Feb. 17 as part of the event.
UVa will host ACC series against Duke, Pitt, Miami, Florida State and Louisville, while traveling to Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
For the third straight year, the Cavaliers will welcome VMI for the home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Other in-state, non-conference opponents include William & Mary, Liberty, Longwood, Richmond, Old Dominion, Norfolk State, Radford, JMU and VCU.
Virginia takes on seven 2018 NCAA Tournament teams – Vanderbilt, Cal State Fullerton, Duke, UConn, N.C. State, FSU and UNC – which advanced to the College World Series in June.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Cavaliers wrapped up the regular season today at the Penn State National Open, with the 19th-ranked men’s team coming in first place overall in the 8k out of 22 schools. The ‘Hoos got top 25 finishes from all five scoring participants on the men’s side, led by Brent Demarest (25:06). The women’s team finished 14th of 28 in the 6k with freshman Abbey Green (20:40) coming in fourth individually. Next up for both squads is the ACC Championships at Boston College on Oct. 26.
MEN’S SOCCER
With just a few games remaining on the schedule, the Virginia men’s soccer team jumps back into conference play tonight on the road against Clemson. The No. 14 Wahoos (7-1-2, 2-1-1 ACC) handed Denver its first loss of the season with a 3-0 shutout Monday night. Freshman Daryl Dike scored a pair of goals and has three in his last three contests. Nat Crofts added a pair of assists in the victory. The UVa defense held the Pioneers to two shots as goalkeeper Colin Shutler recorded his seventh clean sheet of the season. Tonight’s tilt against the Tigers begins at 7 and can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The No. 6 Cavaliers (11-2-0, 4-2-0) concluded road play for the rest of the regular season in fine fashion Sunday with a 3-0 shutout at Notre Dame. Senior Montana Sutton scored a goal and assisted the other two – one by Sydney Zandi and one by first-year forward Alexa Spaanstra – who also registered an assist. Goalie Laurel Ivory notched her fifth solo shutout of the year. The Wahoos will play each of their last four matches at Klöckner Stadium: Pitt visits Sunday at 2, then Syracuse, Florida State and N.C. State to wrap things up on Thursday, Oct. 25.
VOLLEYBALL
Virginia (5-11, 1-5) heads down Tobacco Road this weekend to face N.C. State tonight in Raleigh at 6 (on ESPNU) and then to Chapel Hill Sunday at UNC. The ‘Hoos picked up their first win in nearly a month last Friday, 3-2, over Boston College at Mem Gym, rallying from down 8-4 in the deciding fifth set for their first conference win of the season.
FIELD HOCKEY
The UVa field hockey team got back in the win column Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Miami-Ohio. Senior Greta Ell put home the game-winner with just over 10 minutes to play. The No. 20 Cavaliers (5-7, 1-4) had been blanked in three straight contests against top-10 competition and had dropped six of their last seven. The ‘Hoos look to keep it rolling at 18th-ranked Delaware today at 5 before returning home for the next two against Wake Forest and Maryland next week.
GOLF
Both the Wahoo women’s and men’s teams return to action this weekend. The 10th-ranked women’s team is at the Tar Heel Invitational, while Bowen Sargent’s men’s squad travels to the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, TN.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
After a season-opening sweep of Penn State last weekend, nine members of the No. 10 UVa women’s team – eight swimmers and one diver – will participate in this weekend’s 25th Annual SMU Classic. Both the men’s and women’s teams will return home next Saturday to host Pitt in the ACC opener.
