Men’s Golf: UVA in first place after strong opening day at Baton Rouge Regional

The No. 12 Virginia men’s golf team shot 8-under 280 to grab the first-round lead at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional at LSU’s University Club. All five Cavaliers shot even par or better during the opening round of the three-day event.

The top five finishers from six NCAA regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Deven Patel posted a bogey-free round that featured five birdies to grab the first-round lead at 67. Bryan Lee is in fourth place at 2-under 70. His round featured five birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. Patel is one shot ahead of LSU’ Connor Gaunt and Houston’s Wolfgang Glawe.

First-year Josh Duangmanee shot 1-under 71 and is in ninth place while Ben James and George Duangmanee both posted scores of even par 72 and are tied for 15th place. Both James and Josh Duangmanee carded six birdies during their rounds.

In the team standings, top-ranked Auburn trails UVA by five shots at 3-under 285. Ohio State is tied with Houston for third place at 1-over 289 and Duke is in fifth position at 3-over 291.

Virginia, Auburn and Ohio State will start the second round at 9 a.m. ET from the first tee. Live scoring of the event is online at Golfstat.com.
