Virginia attackman Payton Cormier has been named one of nine Tewaaraton Award Watch List first-round additions, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced on Thursday. The list includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for this year’s Tewaaraton Award.

Cormier is currently third among Division-I players and leads the ACC in both goals per game (4.50) and points per game (6.00). In each of his four appearances so far this season, Cormier has scored at least three goals, including a career high of seven against then-No. 9 Ohio State on Feb. 25.

Cormier joins teammates Connor Shellenberger, Petey LaSalla and Cole Kastner as candidates for the award. Shellenberger, LaSalla and Kastner were named to the Foundation’s initial Watch List on Feb. 10.

“We’ve seen an exciting, action-packed start to the 2023 season. These players have distinguished themselves and earned their way onto our 2023 Watch Lists,” said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “The Tewaaraton Foundation would like to congratulate these players on their outstanding play thus far, and we wish them and their teams the best of luck for the rest of this season.”

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

Cormier and the top-ranked Cavaliers (5-0) return to action on Saturday, when they host Towson (1-4). Opening faceoff from Klöckner Stadium is set for 4 p.m. on ACC Network.
