Men’s Tennis: Top-ranked Hoos sweep Flames, 7-0

The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team picked up a 7-0 road victory at Liberty on Thursday in Lynchburg. The Cavaliers won the doubles point and took five of six singles matches in straight sets. Bar Botzer preserved the sweep by winning an epic third-set super tiebreaker, 21-19, against Zion Heaven in the final match of the day against the Flames (0-1).

The Cavaliers (3-0) opened the match with wins on the top two doubles courts to pick up the point. In singles, Iñaki Montes rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Christiaan Worst to open play. Chris Rodesch and Ryan Goetz followed with quick victories on courts one and four to guarantee victory. Freshman Måns Dahlberg improved to 2-0 to start his collegiate career with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win against Thando Longwe-Smit on court six. Jeffrey von der Schulenburg won a tiebreaker 7-4 to close out a straight-set victory on court three to put UVA ahead 6-0 before Botzer closed out the match with his 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (19) victory.
