Moyers reigns supreme over City, breezes to another title

By Jerry Ratcliffe

Whatever was ailing Mikey Moyers earlier this spring is long gone, as the Greene Hills golfer roared to a healthy runaway finish Sunday, coasting to the Charlottesville City Championship at Meadowcreek Golf Course.

Moyers, who opened the final round with a four-shot lead, posted a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the tournament by a whopping 11 shots. It was Moyers’ second-straight City title, having won the event the last time it was held in 2019.

After posting a spectacular, nine-birdie, 8-under 63 in Saturday’s opening round, Moyers finished with a two-day total of 130. Tyler Austin closed with an even-par 71 (141) to tie Garnett Manley III for second place. Manley entered Sunday trailing Moyers by four shots but dropped back with a 74 in his final round. Nick Little’s 2-under 69 was good for fourth place.

Meanwhile, in the Senior Division, Farmington’s Phil Mahone, who has won multiple Meadowcreek titles over his career, captured his first Senior crown in his first attempt in that division. Mahone put together rounds of 66-70–136 (-6) to defeat UVA men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent by two strokes (66-72–138).

Steve Cox won the Super Senior division with a 69-68–137, defeating Ronnie Snow by four strokes. It was the first Super Senior title for Cox in the event.

The City was Moyer’s first individual tournament of the year, although he has played a lot at his home course, Greene Hills.

“Up until now, I didn’t think my game was good enough,” Moyers said. “A couple of months ago I was sick and couldn’t hit the ball 200 yards and so I didn’t sign up for the State Open or State Am. I didn’t think I was playing that great. All of a sudden within the last month, it all came back to me full force.”

Moyers spent two weeks in the hospital and had lost so much strength that he had to change shafts from regular to stiff and extra stiff because he didn’t know if he would regain what he had temporarily lost.

“I’m just happy to be out here, honestly,” the champion said.

He has regained his consistency and his wedge game, particularly 100 yards and in, has been outstanding of late. Moyers said he may play in the Eastern Am and the State Mid Am, among some other large tournaments.
