NCAA Track & Field Championships begin today; nine Cavaliers set to compete

The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a total of nine student-athletes to compete in the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field from Wednesday through Saturday. Five men and four women will represent the Cavaliers on the national stage.
The men’s and women’s competitions will alternate days with the men competing on Wednesday and Friday while the women will be in action on Thursday and Saturday.
How To Follow
Coverage of the meet will be broadcast live on the ESPN networks. Running events will be streamed on ESPNU on Wednesday and Thursday. Coverage of the track events will shift to ESPN2 on Friday and over to ESPN on Saturday. Individual coverage of field events will be streamed on ESPN 3 throughout the meet.

Hoos Competing
Ethan Dabbs, Men’s Javelin (Wed.)
Fresh off his third-straight ACC javelin title, Dabbs enters the NCAA Championships for the first time since his freshman season in 2019 where he earned All-American status. Coming off Tommy John Surgery over the summer, Dabbs enters the championships with the top mark this season (82.92 meters) and his sights set on a national title.
Claudio Romero, Men’s Discus (Fri.)
Romero returns to Eugene for the second-consecutive season after making the podium with a third-place finish in 2021. The Chilean holds the second-best mark in the NCAA (67.02 meters) second only to Cal’s Mykolas Alekna. The two will go head-to-head in the second flight of the discus fighting for the top spot on the podium. Romero was the ACC Champion in the event this season.
Jacob Lemmon, Men’s Discus (Fri.)
Jacob Lemmon also returns to Eugene for the second time in his career. In 2021 Lemmon impressed as he earned first team All-American honors placing fifth in the discus. In his second trip to Hayward Field, he will once again look to establish himself amongst the best in the nation.
Owayne Owens, Men’s Triple Jump (Fri.)
Owayne Owens enters the men’s triple jump with the sixth-best mark this season (16.61 meters). Last season the triple jumper placed 15th at the NCAA Championships earning second team All-American honors. Owens won gold in the triple jump at the ACC indoor championships this season and silver at the outdoor competition.
Yasin Sado, Men’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase (Wed.)
Yasin Sado will make his NCAA Championships debut on the first day of competition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. After narrowly missing the cut in 2021, Sado put together an impressive season in 2022. The Sophomore came within one second of topping Derek Johnson’s UVA record in the steeplechase while also accomplishing the first sub-four-minute mile in his career.
Helena Lindsay, 3,000-meter Steeplechase (Thu.)
Helena Lindsay is set to compete in the first NCAA Championship meet of her career. This season, Lindsay consistently moved her way up in the Virginia record books before letting loose at the NCAA East Preliminary meet. The steeplechaser clocked a career-best time of 10:02.27 which not only ranks fourth in Virginia history but gives her the chance to compete on the national stage.
Maria Deaviz , Women’s Shot Put (Thu.)
Maria Deaviz dominated the ACC in the shot put this season sweeping both the indoor and outdoor titles in the event. She now turns her attention to the national stage where she qualified for her second NCAA Championship appearance in as many years. Deaviz enters the competition with a season-best mark of 17.32 meters, a UVA school record.
Jada Seaman, Women’s 200 meters (Thu.)
A standout performer for the Cavaliers, Seaman has advanced to the NCAA Championships in each season she has competed at UVA. That holds true in 2022 as the sprinter ran 23.00 in the 200 meters and took down a 35-year-old Virginia record in the event at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
Ashley Anumba, Women’s Discus (Sat.)
Anumba has been a stand-out performer since she first stepped on to Lannigan Field this spring. The graduate transfer took down a school record in her very first meet as a Wahoo and has not looked back since. Her season-best mark of 57.53 meters puts her in the mix amongst the best in the nation as she looks to continue her strong campaign at the NCAA Championships.
