No. 4 UVA advances three boats to A/B semifinals at NCAAs

rowingNo. 4 Virginia advanced all three boats to the A/B semifinals at the NCAA Rowing Championships Friday at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.

The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four each placed second in its respective Friday morning heats to advance to Saturday’s (May 29) A/B semifinals.

“Our goal for today was for all crews to make it through to the semifinals, and all crews achieved that goal,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We’re looking forward to some fast challenging semis tomorrow.”

In Friday morning heats, UVA’s Varsity Eight placed second behind Michigan 6:23.858-6:27.858. Washington State placed third, followed by Duke, Northeastern and Rhode Island.

UVA’s Second Varsity Eight finished second behind Ohio State. The Buckeyes defeated the Cavaliers 6:29.445-6:36.713. Syracuse place third followed by Wisconsin, Marist and Rhode Island.

The Cavaliers’ Varsity Four finished second behind Washington. The Huskies edged the Cavaliers 7:00.944-7:02.798. Washington State placed third followed by Alabama, Navy and Northeastern.

NCAA championship action continues Saturday with the semifinals beginning at 8:12 a.m. ET.
