The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team picked up a 3-2 victory at No. 25 Duke on Friday at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C. Virginia scored all three of its goals in the second quarter. Virginia held an 18-4 edge in shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first quarter, Virginia (8-3, 3-1 ACC) got on the scoreboard 23 seconds into the second quarter. Laura Janssen took off on a breakaway down the sideline, passing ahead to Annie McDonough who knocked the ball toward the goal where Daniela Mendez-Trendler deflected it in for the score.

Duke (4-8, 0-4) tied the game four minutes later on a second chance shot after a penalty corner, their lone penalty corner of the game. The Cavaliers answered a minute later with Noa Boterman scoring off a penalty corner. Laura Janssen added a third score with 13 seconds left in the half, scoring a second-chance goal after a corner.

Duke added its second goal by converting a penalty stroke in the third quarter. Duke pulled its goalie for the final minute of the game to add an extra attacker, but did not manage a shot in the fourth quarter.

  • Virginia held a 10-1 edge in penalty corners
  • Duke changed goalies at halftime. Their two keepers combined for eight saves
  • Jet Trimborn did not make a save for UVA
  • Daniela Mendez-Trendler’s goal was her sixth of the year
  • Noa Boterman’s goal was her fourth of the year
  • Laura Janssen’s goal was her team-leading eighth of the year
