The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss against No. 12 Wake Forest on Friday at Turf Field. Wake Forest scored the lone goal of the game with 5:03 remaining in regulation to snap UVA’s six-game win streak and hand the Cavaliers their first home loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Demon Deacons (11-3, 3-1 ACC) had a prime scoring opportunity in the final four minutes of the third quarter when they were awarded a penalty stroke, but the attempt by Sky Caron was saved by freshman goalkeeper Jet Trimborn.

Wake Forest broke the 0-0 deadlock with 5:03 remaining in the game when they scored off their third penalty corner of the game, with Abby Carpenter tapping in a shot from the far left side of the cage.

Virginia (9-4, 3-2) pulled its goalkeeper after Wake’s score and ended up with a two-player advantage after a Wake Forest player was given a five-minute yellow card with 3:32 remaining in regulation, but Wake’s defense held the Cavaliers shotless down the stretch.

NOTES

  • Each team took nine shots
  • Virginia held a 4-3 edge in corners
  • Jet Trimborn made one save while Wake Forest’s Ellie Todd logged two saves
  • This was Trimborn’s first loss. She is now 6-1
  • All four of Virginia’s losses this season have been by one goal
  • This was the first time Virginia was shut out this season

UP NEXT

The Cavaliers have Sunday off, playing instead on Tuesday (Oct. 18) at No. 16 Liberty at 4 p.m. Virginia travels to play at No. 1 North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 21, before closing out the home slate a week from Sunday (Oct. 23) by hosting Kent State for its Senior Day game.
