Tale of the Tape: Coppin State vs. Virginia

The Coppin State Eagles (0-3) come to John Paul Jones Arena Friday night looking for their first win of the 2018-19 season after finishing 5-27 last year. Virginia fans will remember CSU second-year head coach Juan Dixon from his playing days at the University of Maryland. Dixon’s Eagles dropped their opener on the road against Wisconsin, 85-63, and then lost by 30 at Dayton, falling behind early in both contests and never recovering.

Last time out (at Navy Wednesday), the Eagles hung around in the first half and trailed the Midshipmen by two at halftime, but were on the wrong end of a 19-0 scoring run early in the second half and wound up losing by 19. When looking at the numbers, one thing that stands out is the number of turnovers. The Eagles have committed twice as many as their opponents through the first three games (52-26) and are averaging 17.3 giveaways a game, something Virginia’s stellar defense should be able to take full advantage of.

Virginia won the only other meeting in the series back in 1993 in the days of Terry Holland, when Harold Deane, Cornel Parker and Jason Williford led the Wahoos to a 63-61 win at University Hall after trailing at the half.

Coppin State averages just 55.7 points a game and is giving up 79.3, and could very well see a similar outcome against the fourth-ranked Cavaliers Friday night. The game tips off at 7 p.m. and can be live-streamed on ACC Network Extra, via the ESPN app. You can also listen to the Coppin State game (and every other game throughout the season) on the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

Cavalier third-year guard Ty Jerome will look to stay hot, as he’s registered 20 points in both games thus far. It’s the final tune-up for UVA before heading to the Bahamas next week for the Battle 4 Atlantis (Wednesday through Friday), and also the last chance to catch the ‘Hoos at JPJ until Dec. 3 against Morgan State.
