UVA Basketball Notebook: Updates on Kyle Guy, Hausers
By Jerry Ratcliffe
After performing well at the NBA Combine, there is some speculation that former Virginia guard Kyle Guy has improved his chances in next month’s NBA Draft.
One writer from CBS Sports that covered the combine said that Guy demonstrated excellent passing ability as well as skills at driving to the basket against other prospects while at the event. Guy also showed defensive quickness to get the job done.
“Guy may not be a first-round draft pick, but he will get drafted in the second round because of his all-around ability,” the CBS reporter wrote. “Guy is only 6-2, 175 pounds and appears skinny, but he has shown he can overcome his physical deficiencies on the court.”
Guy was officially measured at 6-foot-¾ inches without shoes, 6-2-¼ with shoes.
Not surprisingly, his shooting statistics from both the college 3-point distance and NBA range, were impressive. He scored 59 percent on a variety of shots off the dribble from an array of spots on the floor from college range. He scored even better, an 80 percent average on 10 out of 12 categories on spot up shooting drills.
Guy scored in double figures in both scrimmages he played in at the combine, 10 points (2 for 3 from the arc) in his first game, and 12 (1 for 4 on 3’s) in his second.
“In every meeting [with NBA teams at the combine] I try to reiterate that I know that I’m the best shooter in the class,” Guy said.
The Phoenix Suns are one of the clubs that interviewed Guy, who helped lead Virginia to a national championship in April.
“I had a really good meeting with them and I enjoyed their company a lot,” Guy said. “We talked about how they would use me if I was fortunate enough to get drafted.”
Guy also met with the Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies.
He said he has ignored all the projections of mock drafts, most of which do not have him being drafted.
“If I paid attention to everything and everyone who told me now, I wouldn’t be here right now,” Guy said. “I believe in my ability to stretch the floor and make it really hard for teams to, say whenever Giannis (Antetokounmpo) is driving in the lane, they wouldn’t be able to help as much because I’d be wide open.”
Hausers Decision Coming
According to reports by Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Hauser brothers will likely announce their college choice this week.
The Hausers’, Sam and Joey, were two of Marquette’s top players last season and both transferred from the program following the season. They visited Wisconsin, Virginia, and Michigan State in that order.
Potrykus said a source told him that the brothers are expected to choose Wisconsin.
They are both from Steven’s Point, Wisc., hometown of both UVA head coach Tony Bennett and assistant coach Brad Soderberg.
Both of the Hausers will have to sit out a transfer year before coming eligible to play in 2020-21.
