UVA football schedule lightens up in ’25
By Jerry Ratcliffe
Unlike last season, when Virginia’s football schedule was backloaded with one top-25 opponent after another, the 2025 slate appears to be much more manageable.
While eight of the Cavaliers’ 12 opponents participated in bowl games, none of them approach the quality of last season’s lineup, which featured three teams that played in the 12-team College Football Playoffs. UVA will play seven home games and will face three new opponents in Cal, Stanford and Washington State.
Here is the schedule and dates, along with the opponent’s record from the 2024 season (home games in bold):
Aug. 30: Coastal Carolina (6-7)
Sept. 6: at NC State (nonconference game, 6-7)
Sept. 13: William & Mary (7-5)
Sept. 20: Stanford (3-9)
Sept. 26: Florida State (Friday night, 2-10)
Oct. 4: at Louisville (9-4)
Oct. 11: Open Date
Oct. 18: Washington State (8-5)
Oct. 25: at North Carolina (6-7)
Nov. 1: at California (6-7)
Nov. 8: Wake Forest (4-8)
Nov. 15: at Duke (9-4)
Nov. 22: Open Date
Nov. 29: Virginia Tech (6-7)
Only four teams (Louisville, Duke, William & Mary and Washington State) finished 2024 with winning records. Last season, UVA’s final seven opponents were: Louisville, Clemson, UNC, Pitt, Notre Dame, SMU and Virginia Tech. Clemson, SMU and Notre Dame made the 12-team College Football Playoffs, including the Irish, who played for the national championship.
Virginia lost six of its last seven games, beating only Pitt on the road.
On this year’s schedule, the Cavaliers will play at NC State, at North Carolina and at Duke (all on Tobacco Road) for the first time since 1970 and only the fourth time ever.
