UVA safety Chalmers joins six other Wahoos in transfer portal Monday

By Jerry Ratcliffe

Virginia’s secondary was hit hard by the transfer portal when Chayce Chalmers joined Fentrell Cypress II in announcing they were leaving the program.

As of 7 p.m. Monday, a total of seven Cavaliers announced plans to enter the portal, including starting quarterback Brenan Armstrong, who revealed his plans before the weekend. Joining Armstrong, Cypress and Chalmers, are: reserve quarterback Mark Wagner II, wide receiver Sean Moore, linebacker Zachery Teter and long snapper Lee Dudley. Also, starting wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (see related story) announced he intends to declare for the NFL draft, joining cornerback Anthony Johnson, who said last week that he will also enter the draft.

Without Johnson and Cypress, Virginia will be losing its two starting cornerbacks along with Chalmers, a rising senior who played behind senior Antonio Clary at the strong safety spot this past season.

Armstrong was one of five ACC quarterbacks to announce he would enter the portal, joining NC State’s Devin Leary, Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelie, Pitt’s Kedon Slovis and Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec. Jurkovec spent less than 24 hours in the portal, already committing to play at Pitt. Also, Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne entered the portal.
