UVA’s Coughlin secures spot on U.S. Solheim Cup team
By Jerry Ratcliffe
Former Virginia women’s golfer Lauren Coughlin has officially clinched a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team, which will be played in less than 25 days at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. (on Route 29).
Coughlin is on the LPGA Tour’s hottest success streak, having won her second tournament title in just 21 days, capturing the Women’s Scottish Open last weekend and the Canadian Women’s Open a few weeks ago. She has earned five more top-10 finishes this season, including a third-place finish at The Chevron Championship.
“There’s probably no hotter player on the LPGA Tour right now than Lauren,” said Stacy Lewis, captain of the U.S. Solheim Cup team. “To win two of the last three events and play the way she has been the entire year, it’s been awesome to see.
“She got onto our radar at the end of last year and it’s been great to see her play continue to get better in 2024. What a cool Solheim Cup this will be for her with her connections to Virginia, so I’m excited for Lauren to experience the entire week at Robert Trent Jones as a Solheim rookie.”
The Solheim Cup will be played Sept. 13-15 at RTJ. For more information, visit: https://www.solheimcupusa.com/.
Lewis is hoping lots of Virginians will come out to support Coughlin in the event, as the U.S. hopes to take its first Solheim Cup since 2017.
Pretty cool that Lauren Coughlin will get to represent her home country in the Commonwealth at the 2024 @TheSolheimCup https://t.co/xr7qw6cypu
