A month after finishing runner-up in the VSGA Senior Amateur championship, University of Virginia men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent continued his strong play Monday, finishing in a fifth-place tie in the Senior Open of Virginia.

Sargent put together rounds of 75-69—144 to finish at even par for the two-day event at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. He finished six strokes back of champion Matt Sughrue of Arlington.

Sughrue outlasted Buck Brittain and Jon Hurst, who both finished three shots back, and Robert Slavonia (four shots back).

Wintergreen Resort’s director of golf Geoff Redgrave finished tied for 35th and plus-9, 153, while Farmington’s Philip Mahone was tied for 51st at plus-13, 157. Steve DeMasters was 65th at plus-18, 162.
