UVA’s Sargent stays on hot streak with 5th-place finish at VSGA Senior Open

A month after finishing runner-up in the VSGA Senior Amateur championship, University of Virginia men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent continued his strong play Monday, finishing in a fifth-place tie in the Senior Open of Virginia.

Sargent put together rounds of 75-69—144 to finish at even par for the two-day event at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. He finished six strokes back of champion Matt Sughrue of Arlington.

Sughrue outlasted Buck Brittain and Jon Hurst, who both finished three shots back, and Robert Slavonia (four shots back).

Wintergreen Resort’s director of golf Geoff Redgrave finished tied for 35th and plus-9, 153, while Farmington’s Philip Mahone was tied for 51st at plus-13, 157. Steve DeMasters was 65th at plus-18, 162.

Other noteables: former pro Bobby Wadkins, who has returned to the amateur circuit, finished tied for fifth with Sargent; Keith Decker finished tied for 21st and plus-6, legendary Vinny Giles was tied for 31st at plus-8, and David Partridge tied for 39th at plus-10.
