Virginia begins play at NISC Sunday against Bowling Green

The Virginia softball team is set to open play at the National Invitational Softball Tournament on Sunday against Bowling Green. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m. ET in the second-round matchup.

Virginia is the top seed in the tournament and earned a first-round bye. Bowling Green is coming off a 7-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin in Saturday’s first-round game.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia (27-24) is making its first appearance in a national postseason tournament since the 2010 NCAA Tournament
  • The Hoos are second in the ACC in fielding percentage (.975) and rank 19th nationally in fielding percentage
  • UVA is on pace to set the single-season mark for fielding percentage, besting the .964 mark set by the 2005 team
  • The Cavaliers are hitting .252 as a team with 38 home runs, 226 runs scored and 199 RBI this season
  • Virginia is led at the plate by sophomore catcher Leah Boggs who is hitting at a .293 clip
  • Boggs continues to lead the ACC with 15 runners caught stealing this season and ranks 14th nationally
  • Junior shortstop Katie Goldberg and freshman third baseman Sarah Coon are tied for the team lead with 32 RBI
  • Senior designated player Tori Gilbert leads the team with 11 home runs, while Goldberg is second with 10
  • Sophomore pitcher Madison Harris ranks first in the ACC with six saves and ranks third nationally
  • Harris has eight career saves and needs one more to tie the UVA saves mark set by Erin Horn (2003-06)

VIRGINIA VS. BOWLING GREEN

  • Virginia and Bowling Green (33-19) have faced each other 13 times with the Hoos leading the series 10-3
  • The Cavaliers are 9-1 against the Falcons and won nine straight before BGSU won the last meeting in 2006

TRIO OF HOOS NAMED NFCA ALL-REGION SELECTIONS

  • Three Hoos were named to NFCA All-Region teams with Leah Boggs, Tori Gilbert and Katie Goldberg selected
  • Boggs was a first-team selection, while Gilbert was a second-team selection and Goldberg was named third team
  • It is the first time since the 2019 team that UVA has had a player named to an All-Region team
  • The three players selected is the most in a single season for the Cavaliers since the 2012 season had three

EARLY SCORING GOOD SIGN FOR THE HOOS

  • The early innings have been good to the Hoos as UVA has scored 107 of 226 runs through the first three innings
  • The first and second innings of games has been the most prolific with Virginia scoring 36 runs in each frame
  • When Virginia has a lead after four innings, the Cavaliers are 21-3 this season and 19-1 when leading after five
  • Teams have only scored 75 runs in the final three innings against the Hoos through 51 games
